Objectives
Founded on May 15, 1985, in Geneva, NORDESTA Reforestation & Education aims to preserve forests and improve the living conditions of rural populations in tropical areas.
The Environment
- Save primitive forests and plant native trees to reforest damaged areas.
- Set up tree nurseries that will produce trees and create local jobs.
- Plant forest corridors to connect isolated forest fragments.
- Preserve animal and plant biodiversity in all its forms.
- Provide access to water for all by protecting springs and installing cisterns and rainwater collectors.
- Raise awareness among local populations of the importance of tropical forests, water and soil, biodiversity, and climate.
- Encourage local farming programs with participation in the fields of sustainable organic plantations and help to set up bee hives.
- Organize seminars and training workshops on ecology with local teachers to enable them to act as multiplying agents.
Education
- Construct schools and libraries.
- Create training workshops to instruct young people in activities such as carpentry, ceramics, drawing, gardening, sewing, and screen process printing.
- Support the schooling of girls thanks to our "The way to school for every girl" project launched in 2001.
- Equipping local centers that offer accommodation, attention, food, and education to street kids.
- Participation in the fight against hunger through projects of the "Zero Hunger" program launched by President Lula da Silva through programs such as school gardens, beekeeping, bakeries, and equipment for small farmers.
Criteria
Projects supported by Nordesta all meet the following criteria:
- Priority is given to projects initiated by the local population.
- Recipients must demonstrate their involvement in the project at all levels.
- The project must acquire financial autonomy in the medium and long term.
- The priority beneficiaries are the most impoverished: children and women of rural populations, small farming families, and Indian communities.
- Each project must generate "Multiplying Agents" who will help its consolidation and expansion.
- The projects are part of the sustainable development perspective, which links human beings to their environment.
- Support farming communities in their struggle to preserve ecosystems.
- The municipalities working with us must set up or reinforce their local Agenda 21. Our history About Anita Studer
